“Voices from the Field” 

This video series was developed by IELCE practitioners from various programs in Virginia. Each video highlights the specific strategies that these programs are implementing to support their English language learners in their IELCE programs.

Supporting ELLs in IELCE Programs: The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia

In this video, Melissa Rea, the Associate Director of Academic Operations and Student Supports, highlights some of the supplemental supports that are available for IELCE participants and English language learners at the literacy council including student advisors, supplemental tutoring, conversation classes, and study halls. This program exemplifies how to support ELLs throughout the duration of a program and how to effectively transition learners to their next step in the career pathway.

Supporting ELLs in IELCE Programs: Region 7

In this video, Brandi Millar, Lord Fairfax Community College Adult Education Instructor, and Kelsey Myers, Lord Fairfax Community College Adult Education IELCE and ESL Instructor, discuss how their IELCE IET was designed to support their English language learners by leveraging their employer partner collaborations to offer their learners employer specific contextualized instruction and additional opportunities including internships and industry specific job opportunities. Other supports that they discuss include a thorough vetting process, chunking content, and providing  supplemental instruction in identified content areas.

Supporting ELLs in IELCE Programs: Region 21

In this video, Danielle Perry, the IET Coordinator, explains their four step process for supporting English language learners in their IELCE program. This process takes learners from ESL classes to workforce training by providing industry bootcamps, tutoring, and career support.

In this video, Katy Parrish, the Waynesboro Adult Education and Region Six Adult Education Manager, highlights the strategies of leveraging dual-enrollment, creating career pathways, and using a cohort structure to support ELLs in their healthcare and manufacturing IET programs.

Supporting ELLs in IELCE Programs: Region 15

In this video, Melinda Dart, the Adult ESL Support Specialist/Assistant Coordinator, shares how their IELCE program supports English language learners. The strategies that are highlighted in this video are creating career pathways, providing tutoring support, and listening to student voice.
