Tips for Clients

  • Tips for Clients in the Job Placement Process

On this page, you will find information about partnering with your local One-Stop Center, tips and videos for interview preparation, and resources for resume writing.

One-Stop Centers

In addition to helping students prepare for interviews, write resumes, and strengthen their academic skills, soft skills, and vocational skills, contact your local One-Stop Center about their job placement resources and business partners; they may have direct relationships with employers who can work with your clients.

One-Stop centers provide resources for job searching and improving professional skills. Sixty-five centers are open across Virginia. Use this document to find a One-Stop Center close to you; it lists both Comprehensive and Affiliate sites. Both types of sites provide self-service job search assistance and referrals; however, comprehensive sites also offer individualized career services and on-site access to partner program services.

In preparation for job placement, engage employers by asking…

A. Questions for Career Coaches to Ask Employers / Businesses

  • What are persistent skill gaps and why?
  • What are your check in systems with your employee?
  • What long-term resources do you anticipate are needed to ensure employee success?
  • Do you feel the employee has positively impacted your business?
  • Have you partnered with employers to identify and develop career pathways
  • What are effective ways to develop or strengthen this working relationship? (Ask questions to set up systems for feedback.)

B. Questions for Job Seekers to Ask Employers

  •      What skills are needed to perform this job successfully?
  • What are skills that I can learn while on the job?

Student Demonstration Video: Interview Do’s and Don’t’s

This video was produced in 2012 by a PluggedInVA Customer Care/Information Technology cohort in Buchanan County as part of their capstone project.

The students demonstrate both good and not-so-good interview behaviors. In addition to providing useful information for job seekers, this is also an example of an integrated project for students to work on as part of a workforce preparation course.
